Over the course of 4,000-year recorded history, the Yangtze became infamous for its devastating floods, which have taken more than 1 million lives during the past 100 years. The ather of modern China, first proposed the idea of a hydroelectric dam at Three Gorges in 1919. Although the government considered building the Three Gorges Dam during the 1960s, economic resources were limited. So they decided to build the Gezhouba dam first. The Gezhouba Dam took 18 years to build. After that was completed, they started right in on the huge Three Gorges dam.
